Troubleshooting

At Profile Orthodontics, we want your treatment journey to be as smooth and comfortable as possible. If you experience any problems with your braces, aligners, or retainers, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you manage common issues and know when to contact us.

Troubleshooting

What should I do if mybraces or fixed appliance breaks?

If something is loose or broken, please message us through the Dental Monitoring app or call us as soon as possible to arrange a repair or replacement.

Please refer to the labelled diagram (showing bands, brackets, archwire and hooks) so you can accurately describe the problem when you contact us.

Immediate steps you can take

  • Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further damage
  • Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges that might irritate your mouth
  • If your archwire is broken, stop wearing any elastics and cover the irritating end with wax
  • A broken bracket or loose band isn’t an emergency but should be repaired before your next appointment

What happens if I lose or damage my aligners, plate, or retainer?

Be careful not to misplace or damage your aligners or plate after taking them out for meals. Always use the case we provide - do not put them in a napkin or tissue which may be thrown away!

If you misplace or damage your aligners, plate, or retainer, please contact us as soon as possible through your Dental Monitoring app.

New retainers can often be made from the final scan we took on the day your appliances were removed, without you needing an appointment. Call the front desk or message through Dental Monitoring to check if we can provide this service for you.

Emergencies

It is rare to encounter an emergency during orthodontic treatment. For advice, please call us. If out of hours, you can message us through your Dental Monitoring app.

If you experience trauma to the face and/or mouth caused by a sporting injury or other accident, please contact your general dentist, see an after-hours emergency general dentist, or go to the Perth Children’s Hospital (or an adult Hospital Emergency).

Once your overall dental situation has been assessed, we can repair your plate or braces.
