Orthodontic appliances (plates)
At Profile Orthodontics, we create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique growth and development. In some cases, this plan may include the use of orthodontic appliances, commonly known as plates.
What are orthodontic appliances?
Orthodontic appliances are devices used to correct early issues with the bite and jaw alignment. These appliances can be either fixed or removable, and they are typically used in the upper dental arch and may be used to alter the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
Functional appliances
Functional appliances work by using natural forces from muscle activity, tooth eruption, and jaw growth. They can be fixed or removable and are particularly useful in correcting jaw discrepancies.
One common use is to bring the lower jaw forward to better align with the upper jaw. Some well-known types of functional appliances include:
- Herbst
- Jumper
- Activator
- Twin Block
- Bionator
Each of these appliances is selected based on your child’s specific needs and stage of development.
Palatal expanders
Palatal expanders are another type of orthodontic appliance often used to treat overcrowding or bite issues. Before the upper jaw (maxilla) finishes growing, a palatal expander can be used to gradually widen it, creating more space for teeth and improving jaw alignment.
Some expanders are fixed in place and activated over time to carefully achieve the desired expansion of the upper dental arch.
